Bathtub IV is a short film by Sydney based photographer Keith Loutit as part of a series of works documenting a year in the life of ‘Little Sydney’. Photographer Mikhael Subotzky has a new body of work entitled "Die Vier Hoeke". The series of photos documents the lives in side the walls of South Africa's prisons. The effects of apartheid and colonialism have severely crippled the natives in the region and just as in many cultures, the end result can be seen in it's prisons. The prisons in SOuthAfrica are severely overcrowded and understaffed, leading to unfathomable living conditions. The 2 part piece can be seen on Subtzky's website here.

Famed director Chris Cunningham and Gucci have teamed up to produce this latest advertisement for their new "Flora" fragrance. The commercial is pretty perfect as is much of Cunningham's work. He is responsible for my favorite music of all time as well as some other videos which are close seconds. Hopefully this ad will be the first of many new works from Cunningham who hasn't been too active over the past years.

For Kelsey, San Diego holds the elements of home and it is obvious that his pursuit of success in art has little to do with recognition or significance, but rather stems from a desire to enjoy life fully and spend his time in meaningful ways. His painting is full of passion, but it doesn’t overshadow his passions for surfing, adventuring, and sharing time with friends, whether new or old. To see that balance is a reminder that good art is an expression of deep and interesting experiences, and the evidence of time well-spent drips out beautifully on Kelsey’s canvases.

Kehinde Wiley has probably been my favorite painter of the moment. Kehinde Wiley's subject matter consists of inserting modern young African American men into the role of historic Western European works of art. His last 2 "World Stage" shows have really changed my view of fine art and probably changed the minds of many. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to see his latest exhibition "The World Stage, Brazil". This show focused on the third segment of his “World Stage” project where Wiley immerses himself in the culture of a country by taking residence there and “street-casting” it’s inhabitants. As he's done in his prior World Stage shows (China and Lagos), Wiley walked the streets of Rio de Janero and asked young people in their everyday clothes to assume poses found in paintings and sculptures found throughout the city. He then painted them with a Western style portraiture technique against a backdrop of indigenous textiles and flowers. Aside from being aesthetically and conceptually amazing, Wiley's work serves a mechanism to dethrone the monarchs and statesmen of worlds past and uplifts everyday man. His paintings are larger to life figuritively and at times actually larger than life. If you happen to been near Los Angeles from now till May 30th, you should make an effort to see this exhibiton.

Henrique Oliveira was born in Ourinhos, Brazil in 1973 and hails from the university of São Paulo, Brazil. Oliveira uses wood collected from the streets of São Paulo where he lives, to create huge installations which he refers to as “tridimensionals”.

The thin sections of wood are obtained from old fencing and boarding known as “tapumes”, are bent and curved into these enormous structures that seem to spill off the gallery walls.

Henrique Oliveira’s first solo exhibition in the United States, will open at Rice art gallery, Houston, Texas on march 26, 2009.

A film you've probably heard of, "Coraline" by Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick, is the first stop motion film to be made using stereoscopic 3D technology. Almost as intriguing as the movie itself is the film's youtube page which has short peces documenting various aspects of the film and it's fruition. Above is Althea Crome. She is noted as being the worlds smallest knitter. She hand knitted all of the miniature costumes used for all the dolls in the film. Crossing The Line: Gone is a short film by Nick Bennet about an American who crossed the demilitarization zone into North Korea from South Korea in 1962. It shows his day to day life in Korea now and his assimilation into North Korean culture. It's interesting to see how people can seem at home in the most foreign of places. Takahiro Miyashita's Number Nine was one of my favorite brands over the past few years, they made some great product and were one of the brands who opened me up to the Japanese market years ago. It was truly a great run. Be sure to grab those last pieces before their all gone. The final Number Nine collection will be their Fall 09 collection appropriately titled "A Closing Feeling"

The Margiela store in LA is by far my favorite store in Los Angeles. Aside from carrying a gret range of clothing every season, it is austhetically and conceptually sound. The outside of the building is entirely sequined in a way no photo can do justice. The layout of the store is great and continues with Margielas brand identity and the concepts seen in other Margiela stores worldwide. Mameg is a store located in the same building as Margiela which is operated by the same people who run The LA Margiela store. The two spces are seperated by a gold corridor which almost seem like a gateway out of Margielas vivid white world of "collage and reflection" into Mameg's world of warmth and domesticity. Uniqlo has just annouced the first wave of collaborative projects under their new Designer Invitation Campaign. The first collections to hit stores will be Steven Alan and Opening Ceremony respective collections this March 9th. They will be followed by an April 13th released of collections by The Gilded Age and Shipley & Halmos. This appears to be similar to what other retailers like H&M and TopShop have been doing by offering collaborative lines. I haven't seen any of the collections other than what is seen above, but I am optimistic. More news awaits...

Maison Martin Margiela has completed their redesign of the Elle Deco Suite. The suite was once the apartment of Palais Chaillot architect Jacques Carlu. With the Eiffel Tower a short distance away this project was initiated by the Cite de L’Architecture & du Patrimoine in the prime location. The suites design is in true Margiela aesthetic with minimal white, and brush painted white filling the entire suite. The suite should be open till October.

Cocaine for a Honeybee

The New York Times has a piece on a group of Australian scientists who conducted an experiment on the effects of cocaine on bees as opposed to humans. The scientists dropped liquid cocaine on the back of certain bees, and when the cocaine reached the brain, they recorded some interesting results. They found that bees react to cocaine much like humans. It hinders their judgement, alters behavior and causes enthusiasm about things which would ordinarily not excite them. The bees also exhibited the same withdrawal symptons as humans

The researchers looked at honeybees whose job is finding food — flying to flowers, discovering nectar, and if their discovery is important enough, doing a waggle dance on a special “dance floor” to help hive mates learn the location.

“Many times they don’t dance,” Professor Robinson said. “They only dance if the food is of sufficient quality and if they assess the colony needs the food.”

On cocaine the bees “danced more frequently and more vigorously for the same quality food,” Dr. Barron said. “They were about twice as likely to dance” as undrugged bees, and they circled “about 25 percent faster.”

The scientists are now conducting further tests to see if bees, like humans, needmore quantity to recieve the same affect. It's a very interesting experiment, you can view the NY Times in it's entirety here.

Speedo | Fast Skin

This Speedo packaging is amazing. It was inspired by Sharks eggs, being that the speedo inside was inspired by sharks skin. Im not a fan of the speedo personally, but none the less this is great presentation. It was done by the Checkland Kidneysides design firm from Leicestershire, UK. They had this to say about the project.

"The skin of the shark was the inspiration for the fabric of the Speedo Fast-Skin suit; the shark’s egg formed the inspiration of our packaging design. A net pouch was created into which the suit can be compressed into the smallest form. A tactile, semi-translucent pouch contains the ‘net’ and printed/embossed graphics subtly brand the packaging."
